| How much is the autograph worth |
How much is the autograph worth? Like any collectible, it's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. A popular celebrity's signature may command high prices one day, only to fall to bargain basement levels a couple of months later. Secondly, autograph values vary widely depending what the autograph is on. Obviously, signed photographs are typically worth much more than the same signature on a slip of paper or napkin. Sometimes an unusual or unique image will command a higher price than a commonly found pose. For example, deceased moonwalker Jim Irwin signed freely through the mail and almost always sent the image of him saluting on the moon. Consequently, other single signed images of him are scarce. Irwin's standard white space suit portrait signed typically goes for 10 to 15 times the price of the more common "salute" photo. The condition of the signed item is key: a badly browned Babe Ruth ball with a faded signature can be had for $1,500, while a ball in great condition with a prominent signature could sell for over $50,000 ! Obviously, signed items in poor condition are worth less than the same item in good condition. There are several good resources for determining autograph values. My experience is that price guide values tend to be high, but these books could still give you a rough idea of the value of the item. (These links open up to Amazon.com.
